That’s the question I get constantly when people learn we moved from the Outer Banks to Wilmington after a decade of barrier island living. It’s a fair question – the OBX is undeniably beautiful and has an incredible community feel.

Let me be clear – we absolutely loved our time in the Outer Banks. The natural beauty is unmatched, from those incredible sunrises over the Atlantic to the wild horses roaming Corolla. The tight-knit community becomes like family, especially during the quieter winter months. True barrier island living offers something you simply can’t find anywhere else.
The summers were magical. Beach access right from our backyard, amazing local restaurants, and that authentic coastal vibe that draws people from all over the world.
The Reality That Changed Our Perspective
After 10 years, certain challenges became harder to navigate as our priorities shifted:
Bridge Dependency Became Exhausting
Every trip off the island required planning around bridge traffic schedules and potential delays. Medical appointments turned into all-day affairs. With my husband traveling frequently for work, that 90-minute drive to the airport added significant stress to our routine.
Seasonal Isolation Hit Differently in Our 40s
The dramatic shift from summer vibrancy to winter quiet felt more isolating as we entered our 40s. When we were contemplating life after our kids graduate high school, year-round consistency became more appealing.
